Winter is Coming.. October at Zen!!

We can already feel the ever reminiscent bite to the air and indeed the chills that come with it. It's not too cold just yet, but it will be and we know it! Above the skies across Europe last night, tonight and tomorrow, you'll be able to witness the ever potent and majestic powers of The Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the closest Full Moon to the Autumn Equinox (September 23rd) and will rise just as the Sun sets, almost giving us an equal amount of night, as it does day. The Moon will shine brightly early on, which gives farmers a helping hand when rearing the harvest from their summer crops, hence the name, The Harvest Moon.

Back down on Earth there is tonnes happening! Ohh yes! Festivals a plenty, from the Celtic festival of Samhain to the explosively bright lights of Diwali (the Hindu Festival of Light). We come together in many ways and bring warmth and shed light on each other, in preparation for the darkest part of our year around the Sun.

Zen are always sharing the light, especially where there is darkness. For us to see light, we must know there is dark. And within that very fact alone, we can overcome the darkest of times. Fire, in all it's glory captivates us for it's warmth and light giving energy. Within ourselves we have a fire which too, burns and gives us warmth when we feel the chill. Brrrr...

- COOL FACT -

Halloween is celebrated worldwide, especially in America. The holiday is actually a combination of the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which traditionally marked the end of Harvest season and the Christian's holiday of Nov 1st, All Saint's Day and the night before became All Souls Day. When the Christians came to the Celtic lands, they tried to Christianise everyone and it's timeline. The Irish had a tradition in which they would carve out Turnips and Potatoes and make lanterns to warn off evil spirits. It was only when the Irish began to immigrate to America, that they discovered the Pumpkin, the lantern was revolutionised and is now the iconic symbol of this intertwined festival.
